“There are similarities in their personalities,” Merino said. “They do not mind being the focus of attention. They rise to the greatest pressure, are ready for every challenge and are not shy, even when they come up against the biggest names in the sport.”
The Spanish international described Dowman as an exceptional talent, noting that the Arsenal youngster has repeatedly made an impact when facing senior opponents.
“He has incredible ability. We already knew that, but whenever he goes onto the pitch against adult men, he makes a difference,” Merino said. “He is a huge talent and we have to look after him.”
Merino also stressed that the club’s task is not simply to protect Dowman, but to keep demanding development from a player still at the earliest stage of his career.
“We must continue to push him. He has to keep learning, with his eyes and ears open,” he added. “There is still plenty for him to improve in many areas, and he knows it.”
For Merino, the most valuable quality shared by Dowman and Yamal is their willingness to listen despite their obvious gifts. “Players such as Lamine and Max have outstanding talent, but they are also very humble,” he said. “They always want to learn and hear from the experienced players. That is priceless.”
