Mile Svilar Steps Up Roma Recovery from Toe Fracture

Roma’s schedule will continue without Mile Svilar for the moment, but the goalkeeper’s own updates suggest that his recovery from a toe fracture is being approached with steady purpose rather than inactivity. On the day of Roma’s meeting with Genoa, the Serbian international remained outside the match squad and instead showed further gym work from Trigoria.

Svilar’s route back to the Roma goal

  1. Svilar sustained the injury in training when, during a dive, he loaded his right foot to push off and the fifth toe gave way.
  2. Gian Piero Gasperini described the problem as a non-displaced stress fracture in the lower area of the toe, with a minimum recovery period of around one month expected.
  3. Two days before Roma-Genoa, Svilar shared images of his protective brace and rehabilitation work on an elliptical trainer, exercise bike and leg-press machine. He accompanied the post with a Bruce Lee quotation and the message: “This too shall pass.”
  4. On the day of the Genoa fixture, he posted a new video of himself performing loaded barbell squats, part of a programme designed to rebuild strength in his lower body.
  5. Roma will rely on Pierluigi Gollini until the next break in the calendar, while Svilar’s target is to be available again after the November international window.

A difficult absence in a crowded run

The timing leaves Roma without their first-choice goalkeeper for a demanding section of the season. The Giallorossi have played, or are due to play, nine matches in 27 days during Svilar’s absence, a sequence that makes Gollini’s role more significant than a simple one-match replacement.

Svilar’s injury is not regarded as one carrying long-term implications if it is managed correctly. Orthopaedic specialist Alessandro Piperno explained that a stress fracture is caused by excessive load on the bone and involves only a partial break, meaning that the affected section does not shift out of alignment. That stability generally helps the healing process and, once properly treated, should not affect an athlete’s future performance.

For Roma, the immediate task is to navigate the remaining fixtures before the international pause with Gollini between the posts. For Svilar, each gym session is another step towards returning to the place he has made his own in the championship.
