Filipe Luis says Monaco take matter seriously
Speaking on Wednesday, two days before Monaco host Lens in Friday’s Ligue 1 fifth-round opener at 20:45, head coach Filipe Luis said Brunner had recognised his mistake immediately.
“He is a passionate player, very intense,” the Brazilian coach said. “He made an error during a celebration and he apologised very quickly. The club treats this issue seriously, and he also apologised directly on social media after the game.”
Filipe Luis stressed that the incident should not define the player, while making clear that Monaco expect better conduct.
“He knows it, I know it, everybody knows he made a mistake,” he said. “He is young, we understand that, and it will not happen again.”
The Monaco coach also accepted that the club may have to do without Brunner if the disciplinary authorities impose a suspension.
“He could be banned and we will respect the committee’s decision,” Filipe Luis said. “He is very young, he made an error, and these things happen in football.”
He added: “He is a good lad and everyone likes him. It has happened before with other players and it will happen again. But we want exemplary behaviour from players, particularly for children watching.”
Ethics body refers case for review
The National Ethics Council has taken up the matter on its own initiative, leaving the Ligue 1 disciplinary commission to decide whether Brunner will be punished.
Under Article 4 of the disciplinary regulations, behaviour deemed excessive or inappropriate can result in a one-match ban. If the incident is instead classified under Article 8, concerning intimidating or threatening conduct, the sanction could rise to four matches.
Monaco now wait for the ruling as they prepare for Lens, while Brunner’s first major Ligue 1 spotlight has shifted from the quality of his strike to the consequences of the celebration that followed it.
