Montpellier’s past has fallen silent with the death of former Poland international Jacek Ziober, who has died at the age of 60. The winger-forward spent four years at La Paillade in the early 1990s, becoming one of the most productive attacking figures of that period for the Hérault club.
A lasting Montpellier record
Montpellier paid tribute on Tuesday to Ziober, offering condolences to his family and those close to him. The club recalled the impact made by the Polish attacker during his spell in southern France.
- Ziober represented Montpellier from 1990 until 1994.
- He made 110 appearances for the club.
- He scored 22 goals in Montpellier colours.
- The four-year stint was the most prolific chapter of his club career.
“It is with immense sadness that Montpellier learned of the death of Jacek Ziober at the age of 60,” the club said. “We are thinking deeply of his family and loved ones.”
Memories of European nights
Ghislain Printant, who was part of Montpellier’s coaching staff during Ziober’s time at the club, remembered a player who settled quickly under coach Henryk Kasperczak.
Printant spoke of the European campaign they shared, recalling trips and matches involving Eindhoven, Bucharest and Manchester, while also highlighting Ziober’s kindness and rapid adaptation in Montpellier.
“What a sad piece of news,” Printant said in his tribute. “So many memories, Jacek — our European adventure, Eindhoven, Bucharest, Manchester, your kindness and the way you adapted so quickly under Henryk Kasperczak. Rest in peace. Strength to all the family.”
A Poland international with a wide career
Although Montpellier marked the strongest scoring period of his career, Ziober also made his name with Łódź in his homeland and played for Osasuna in Spain.
- He won 47 caps for Poland.
- He scored seven goals for his national team.
- His Montpellier years came during the opening years of the 1990s.
For Montpellier, the numbers remain clear: 110 matches, 22 goals and a place in the memory of a European era at La Paillade.
