Mourinho Benches Arda Güler as Real Madrid Face Roma in Champions League

Real Madrid begin their second Champions League night of the campaign away to Roma at the Stadio Olimpico, with José Mourinho selecting an aggressively minded side for the 21:00 Spanish-time kick-off. The choice leaves Arda Güler, widely regarded as Madrid’s sharpest performer so far this season, outside the starting line-up.

Madrid favour firepower in Rome

  1. Mourinho has gone with an attacking quartet featuring Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Junior and Diomande, prioritising goals in a demanding European away fixture.
  2. Vinicius is set to start both Champions League matches during his four-game suspension elsewhere, while Diomande’s inclusion is also viewed as preparation for the forthcoming Clásico.
  3. Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni have been picked to provide the protection behind the forwards, a necessary balance given the number of attacking players on the pitch.
  4. Antonio Rüdiger’s experience has earned him the defensive place ahead of Dean Huijsen, despite Huijsen’s encouraging start to the season.

Güler pays the price for selection balance

The principal omission is Güler. The Turkish international has brought more clarity than any other Madrid player in the opening weeks, but the make-up of the side leaves little room for another creator. Bellingham and Mbappé were considered impossible to leave out, while a second successive bench role for Vinicius would have caused considerable noise.

There is also a practical concern over Güler’s physical output: he can fade after the hour mark. That may yet make him a significant option from the bench in a match likely to demand control as well as attacking threat.

Madrid’s selection has been described as politically safe but harsh on Güler. It carries an obvious risk in midfield, where Valverde and Tchouaméni could be stretched by Roma if the visitors’ forward line does not contribute sufficiently without the ball.

A European test before the Clásico

Diomande arrives after scoring for Villarreal and carrying the weight of a major transfer fee. His start in Rome gives him a prominent platform before Madrid’s next domestic landmark, while Vinicius has an opportunity to use Europe as his stage during his suspension.

For Madrid, the evening is not simply about a second matchday result. It is a test of whether Mourinho’s high-powered selection can impose itself in one of Europe’s most demanding away settings without leaving the centre of the pitch exposed. Güler and Bernardo Silva are among the attacking alternatives expected to be watched closely should Madrid need a different rhythm later in the night.
