Oman’s route to the Gulf Cup semi-finals was settled in the most unusual fashion after Musab Al-Shaqsi’s shirtless celebration against Kuwait left his side level with Iraq on every qualification measure.
Al-Shaqsi removed his shirt after Oman’s 3-1 win over Kuwait and received a yellow card. That booking proved consequential: when the group-stage calculations were completed, Oman and Iraq could not be separated by any of the tournament’s established tie-break criteria.
With neither results nor disciplinary records producing a difference between the two national teams, the decision went to a draw of lots around an hour later. Oman emerged from the draw to take the semi-final place, while Iraq missed out.
A celebration with unexpected consequences
The Kuwait match had appeared to give Oman a convincing finish, but Al-Shaqsi’s booking turned a routine celebration into part of the qualification equation. His caution meant Oman and Iraq ended the group inseparable across the measures used to decide progression.
