Napoli Clear Scott McTominay for Return After Cardiac Procedure

Naples has received a timely lift ahead of the weekend: Scott McTominay has been medically cleared to return to competitive football after undergoing a cardiac procedure in Manchester last month.

Clearance after September procedure

The Scotland international underwent a cardiac ablation on 8 September at the Spire Hospital in Manchester, intended to resolve a mild, non-serious arrhythmia. Following further examinations, Napoli’s medical staff have now authorised the 29-year-old midfielder to resume playing.

McTominay has returned to training with the Partenopei and can be included by head coach Massimiliano Allegri for Saturday’s Serie A meeting with Frosinone at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

  • McTominay had the procedure on 8 September.
  • The operation addressed a mild and benign heart-rhythm issue.
  • Additional medical checks have resulted in approval for his competitive return.
  • He is back in Napoli training and eligible for selection against Frosinone.

A midfield absence since August

The former Manchester United player has not featured since 30 August. His absence covered Napoli’s 3-2 league defeat to reigning Serie A champions Inter, as well as the Champions League league-phase loss against Arsenal.

Napoli go into the sixth round of the Italian campaign in ninth place, with Frosinone arriving in Naples from sixth. McTominay’s availability gives Allegri the option of restoring an established presence in the centre of the side at a useful moment in the early-season table.

From Manchester to a central role in Naples

McTominay joined Napoli in August 2024 after coming through Manchester United’s academy system and establishing himself in their first team. Since moving south to Italy, he has become one of the defining figures of Napoli’s midfield.

He played an important role in the club’s 2024-25 Scudetto success, and his return offers Napoli the prospect of bringing back a player who has quickly become a pillar of their recent continental and domestic ambitions.
