Napoli Seek Villarreal Response After Arsenal Defeat in Champions League

Napoli will take a revived domestic mood into a demanding Champions League night at Villarreal, where Max Allegri’s side need a result after beginning their European campaign with a home defeat to Arsenal.

The league response has restored some confidence around the club, but the trip to Spain presents a different test. Villarreal have recently shown their level against Real Madrid, and Napoli’s coach expects an exacting evening on their opponents’ ground.

“We have to take points,” Allegri said. “Villarreal proved against Real Madrid that they are in good form, and it will be difficult at their stadium.”

Selection still open after Frosinone

Allegri has not yet settled on his starting XI, with the recovery of several players to be assessed following the match against Frosinone. Scott McTominay is among the options to start in the Champions League, although the coach would not commit to a final decision.

“It is possible that McTominay will start, but I have not chosen the eleven yet because I need to assess a few players after the Frosinone game,” he said.

Napoli could also receive a timely boost over the coming days. André-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Alisson are expected to return to group training from Wednesday, giving Allegri further possibilities as the side look to steady their European route.

Allegri dismisses formation debate

The Napoli coach played down discussion over possible changes of system, insisting that recent absences and returning players are more relevant than talk of tactical labels.

“The changes of formation are bar-room conversations,” Allegri said. “There are players who have only just returned.”

For Napoli, the task is straightforward even if the setting is not: turn the domestic recovery into their first Champions League points, and ensure the Arsenal setback does not shape the early course of their season in Europe.
