NBA GMs Back Spurs and Wembanyama for Championship, MVP Honors

San Antonio has landed at the top of the league’s annual general manager forecast, with executives picking the Spurs to win the NBA championship and Victor Wembanyama to collect both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year.

The projection puts an enormous spotlight on a Spurs group built around Wembanyama’s two-way ceiling. The 7-foot-4 star is expected to drive San Antonio at both ends, serving as the centerpiece of a roster now viewed by rival front offices as capable of finishing the job in June.

Wembanyama headlines the executive forecast

Wembanyama was selected as the leading MVP choice in the survey, a sign that league decision-makers expect another major step from the Spurs’ franchise player. He also received the Defensive Player of the Year nod, reflecting the impact he can make around the rim and across the floor with his length, timing and mobility.

For San Antonio, the forecast is not just about individual hardware. The Spurs were picked to emerge from the full championship field, tying the organization’s title hopes directly to Wembanyama’s ability to anchor a contender over an 82-game season and through the playoffs.

Spurs carry championship expectations

The GM survey places San Antonio in a different tier of expectation than it occupied during its recent rebuilding stretch. A title prediction brings the usual pressure points into focus: managing the rotation, finding reliable late-game offense, keeping the group healthy and getting enough production around Wembanyama when opponents load up on him.

Still, the central message from the league’s front offices is clear. The Spurs are being viewed as a championship-caliber team, and Wembanyama is expected to be the defining force in the race for both the league’s biggest individual awards and the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
