Nicolò Casale’s Bologna Revival Under Palladino Continues

Nicolò Casale’s journey in Bologna colours has turned sharply in the space of a month. Left out of the squad against Sassuolo for technical reasons and expected to leave during the summer, the defender has instead become one of the clearest symbols of Raffaele Palladino’s early work. In Sardinia, he delivered the decisive headed goal in a match that had remained finely balanced, then helped Bologna secure their first clean sheet of the season.

The final whistle brought a fitting scene. After the squad had acknowledged the travelling support, Lorenzo De Silvestri urged Casale towards the away end, where more than 400 Bologna fans had filled the allocation. With the man-of-the-match award in hand, the centre-back was able to take in an afternoon that may prove more significant than three points alone.

His return had begun with a start at Lecce, but the recent international break was the real turning point. Palladino’s arrival brought a move to a three-man defence, and Casale spent the 20-day pause as the only specialist central defender available to the new coach. When the season resumed, he had earned a regular place.

A defender given a new place in the side

Casale had appeared close to an exit only a few months ago. Bologna’s original summer plan was for a sale, although his eventual stay owed largely to the lack of a convincing proposal. Now the situation has changed considerably: during the break, he extended his Casteldebole contract by a year, taking his agreement through to 2029 while spreading his current salary across the longer deal.

The back three has offered him a setting in which he appears more secure. Matteo Darmian’s experience on one side and Arthur Theate’s energy on the other have brought balance around Casale, who was rarely troubled defensively in Sardinia before making the difference at the opposite end.

For a player who had once seemed to have his bags packed, the goal and the clean sheet represented a fresh beginning rather than a simple personal revival. Casale’s celebration in front of the travelling fans captured the mood around Palladino’s Bologna: a familiar player, suddenly looking like one of the new faces of the project.
