Madrid’s international break has offered Obed Vargas a route toward the playing time that has so far eluded him at Atlético de Madrid. While Diego Simeone’s midfield remains crowded, Mexico have handed the young midfielder an early opening under Rafa Márquez.
From a stalled loan to Mexico minutes
- Vargas came close to leaving Atlético on loan before the transfer window shut. Alavés and Sevilla were both possible destinations, with regular football the objective.
- No temporary move was completed, leaving the midfielder in Madrid to compete for a place under Simeone.
- He has yet to play for Atlético this season and was omitted from the squad for the match against Athletic Club when a loan departure was still anticipated.
- Mexico gave him his first competitive minutes of the campaign on 27 September, when he entered in the 64th minute against Colombia in place of Gilberto Mora.
- Mexico had drawn level shortly before Vargas arrived, and the match finished 1-1. He operated as an attacking central midfielder ahead of the holding player.
The Colombia display appears to have strengthened his standing with Márquez. Vargas is expected to start Mexico’s next match on Wednesday, scheduled for 4.30am in Spain, in a 4-3-3 system.
He is likely to occupy the right-sided role in a three-man midfield, with Erik Lira stationed at the base. Márquez regards Vargas as an important figure in Mexico’s longer-term plans, including the road toward the 2030 World Cup.
Simeone urges patience in Madrid
Simeone has stressed that Vargas has maintained the same commitment since arriving at the club, despite the difficult competition for places. The Atlético coach described him as humble, decent and hardworking, saying the player must remain ready for the opportunity that should eventually come.
For Atlético, his involvement with Mexico is a welcome development after a season in which his club prospects have been limited. Vargas arrived with little fanfare last campaign but went on to make 13 appearances, starting eight matches and registering one assist.
A first Mexico start would give the Michoacán-born midfielder another chance to show that his development has not stopped while he waits for a breakthrough in Simeone’s squad.
