Marseille will stage Sunday night’s Classique against Paris Saint-Germain under the highest security classification, with authorities placing the match at level 5 on the national risk scale.
Maximum alert for Sunday’s Classique
Olympique de Marseille host PSG at the Stade Vélodrome at 20:45 on Sunday, in one of Ligue 1’s most closely watched fixtures. The National Division for the Fight Against Hooliganism has designated the meeting as a maximum-risk event following recent security discussions.
The level 5 rating is the top category available to the authorities and follows the pattern set for previous Classiques in Marseille. It has been applied despite the absence of travelling PSG supporters.
Paris supporters barred from travelling
The Bouches-du-Rhône prefecture had already issued an order at the end of August banning Paris fans from making the trip to Marseille. The restriction differs from the previous home match involving Paris FC, when visiting supporters were permitted.
A separate ministerial order is also expected to be published before kick-off. Authorities are confident that the planned measures will be respected.
With the away section no longer available to PSG fans, Marseille have begun putting those tickets back on sale. The Vélodrome had not yet reached full capacity as preparations continued for the fixture.
