Metz’s goalkeeper picture has shifted under the floodlights of a new season: Pape Sy has committed his future to the club, while Édouard Soumah-Abbad has left in search of the minutes missing from his path in Moselle.
The move
Sy has signed a two-year extension with FC Metz, taking his contract through to June 2029. The 29-year-old’s previous deal had been due to expire at the end of the current campaign.
The renewal confirms that Sy remains part of Metz’s longer-term project, even though he has not taken the number-one role envisaged during the summer. That scenario changed when Jonathan Fischer stayed at the club rather than making the expected departure from Moselle.
At the same time, Soumah-Abbad has joined Paris 13 Atlético on loan for the remainder of the 2026-27 season. The 23-year-old winger or midfielder will play in France’s third tier, with the move including an option to buy.
The agreement also provides Metz with a percentage of any future transfer fee should Paris 13 Atlético subsequently sell the player.
The French season around it
Soumah-Abbad was not in Luc Holtz’s plans at Metz, making a temporary exit the route towards regular football. Developed by the Grenats, the Grenoble-born player had returned to the club after three successive loan spells, but another departure became necessary to reopen his prospects.
For Sy, the extension brings security despite the altered pecking order in goal. Metz had initially indicated that he would become their first-choice goalkeeper, but Fischer’s continued presence has prevented that plan from being carried out.
- Pape Sy: Metz goalkeeper, 29, under contract until June 2029.
- Édouard Soumah-Abbad: 23-year-old Metz-trained winger or midfielder, loaned to Paris 13 Atlético until the end of 2026-27.
- Jonathan Fischer: remained at Metz, affecting Sy’s expected role as first-choice goalkeeper.
- Luc Holtz: Metz coach, with Soumah-Abbad outside his plans.
