Pedro Rodríguez Retires After Trophy-Laden Career Across Europe

Pedro Rodríguez has brought down the curtain on a career that crossed Spain, England and Italy, ending nearly two decades in the professional game with 26 trophies, three Champions League titles and the rare distinction of being a World Cup and European Championship winner with Spain.

The 39-year-old, born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, announced his retirement after his Lazio contract expired on 30 June. One of the last active members of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad, Pedro leaves the game after scoring 187 goals for Barcelona, Chelsea, Roma and Lazio.

“I feel this is the right time to take a step forward and begin a new chapter in my life,” he said. “I leave proud to have lived my dream and grateful to everyone who stood beside me and helped make it possible. Thank you, football, for making me so happy.”

A decisive figure on Europe’s biggest nights

Pedro’s European story began at Barcelona, where he developed from “Pedrito”, wearing No. 33 on his first-team debut against Real Murcia on 12 January 2008, into a crucial forward in Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering side.

Fast, two-footed across either flank and sharp in front of goal, he scored 99 times in 321 Barcelona appearances. He became renowned for producing in finals and decisive matches, with Estudiantes de La Plata, Sevilla, Shakhtar Donetsk and Manchester United among the opponents punished by his timely interventions.

His Barcelona honours included five La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey wins and three Champions Leagues, in 2009, 2011 and 2015. He also collected four Spanish Super Cups, three UEFA Super Cups and two FIFA Club World Cups.

  • La Liga: 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13, 2014-15
  • Copa del Rey: 2008-09, 2011-12, 2014-15
  • Champions League: 2008-09, 2010-11, 2014-15
  • Spanish Super Cup: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013
  • UEFA Super Cup: 2009, 2011, 2015
  • FIFA Club World Cup: 2009, 2011

Barcelona paid tribute after his announcement, saying Pedro would always remain part of the club’s history and thanking him for what he gave to football and the moments he shared with the club.

From Stamford Bridge to Rome

Pedro took his experience to Chelsea in 2015 and spent five seasons at Stamford Bridge. He made more than 200 appearances, scored 43 goals and added a Premier League title in 2016-17, the FA Cup in 2017-18 and the Europa League in 2018-19.

His move to Serie A did not diminish his appetite for pivotal moments. He spent the 2020-21 season at Roma before joining Lazio, where he worked again under Maurizio Sarri, a coach who understood his qualities as clearly as Guardiola had done.

Across five years with Lazio, Pedro played 209 matches and scored 39 goals, repeatedly supplying either the assist or the finish when his side needed an experienced hand. His departure at the end of his contract closes his Italian chapter as well as his playing career.

Spain’s champion departs

For Spain, Pedro won 65 caps and scored 17 goals. He was an important part of the side that won the 2008 European Championship and the 2010 World Cup, contributing to both final victories.

From his early days at Raqui San Isidro to major finals across Europe and international football’s greatest stage, Pedro leaves with a record built not only on silverware but on his habit of arriving when matches demanded a defining contribution.
