Real Betis gave their Champions League campaign a major lift by defeating Porto at home, a result Manuel Pellegrini described as vital in the pursuit of progression after the club’s long-awaited return to Europe’s leading competition.
The Betis manager said the three points mattered enormously in the battle to reach the next round, while cautioning that qualification will only be secured when it is mathematically confirmed. The win leaves his side with six points from six, a return he called highly significant, but not the end of the job.
Betis recover after Porto response
Pellegrini felt his team controlled the opening half and deserved their early superiority. Betis moved ahead and had an opportunity to make it 2-0, but Porto struck twice from isolated moments to turn the match around.
Rather than allowing the tie to slip away, Betis responded to reclaim the advantage and secure a comeback victory in front of their own supporters.
“We needed those three points at home if we are to try to qualify and keep our target in sight,” Pellegrini said. “We were clearly the better side in the first half. We went in front and had the chance for a second, then they came back through two specific situations. But we turned it around again.”
Intensity sets the tone
The manager highlighted the aggressive work without the ball as central to the performance. Betis had prepared to press and regain possession quickly, and Pellegrini said the players delivered that demand with considerable intensity.
He acknowledged that the effort may have affected the side after the interval, but praised the commitment within the squad. “We had discussed how important it was to win the ball back,” he said. “The team’s intensity was tremendous, although perhaps we felt it in the second half. The players are very committed and I am pleased with their performance.”
Pellegrini added that his side’s display reflected a settled approach rather than a result achieved by chance. “There are different ways to win, but this team has a clear idea and goes out to impose it from the first minute,” he said.
A landmark night for Betis supporters
The Porto victory carried particular meaning at a club playing Champions League football for the first time in 21 years. Pellegrini, who said he has always managed in the competition during his coaching career, stressed the importance of giving Betis supporters a night to celebrate after more than a generation away from this stage.
“Betis had not played in the Champions League for 21 years,” he said. “That is a generation, so this success gives me even more joy. We have given the fans something to celebrate, and they deserve it.”
For all the emotion around the occasion, Pellegrini’s focus remains on what comes next. Six points from two matches have placed Betis in a strong early position, but the manager insisted the European objective remains unfinished until qualification is beyond doubt.
