Pochettino Calls Up Alex Freeman for United States Friendlies

In Villarreal, Alex Freeman’s call-up brings a continental note to the United States squad as Mauricio Pochettino opens a new preparation cycle aimed at the 2030 World Cup. The defender has been included for four September and October friendlies against Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada.

Pochettino, the Argentine coach of the United States, has selected 28 players for the opening camp of the new cycle. Thirteen members of the group featured at the World Cup staged across the United States, Mexico and Canada, while 11 players could make their senior international debuts.

Freeman joins a group that blends established internationals with a sizeable intake of young players from clubs in the United States and Europe.

The uncapped defenders are Peyton Miller of New England Revolution, plus Philadelphia Union pair Neil Pierre and Frankie Westfield. In midfield, Borussia Dortmund’s Mathis Albert has been chosen alongside Zavier Gozo of Crystal Palace, Adri Mehmeti of Red Bull New York and Brooklyn Raines of New England Revolution.

The new attacking options are Cole Campbell of Elversberg, Orlando City forward Justin Ellis, Red Bull New York’s Julian Hall and Philadelphia Union prospect Cavan Sullivan. Ellis is also being monitored by Uruguay coach Diego Forlán because of his family background.

Pochettino said the camp marked the start of a fresh phase for the national side, with experienced players working beside youngsters of considerable promise. He stressed that the group must quickly understand the team’s culture, training methods and footballing principles, while showing the level of responsibility supporters expect from those representing the country.
