Polish football is mourning the death of Oskar Kordus, the 20-year-old Kania Gostyn player who died after a road accident on Thursday, 24 September.
Kordus, who played in Poland’s fourth tier, was driving when a deer struck by another vehicle was thrown into the path of his car. The animal crashed through his windscreen and hit the young footballer, leaving him with critical injuries.
The driver of the first vehicle was unharmed. Emergency crews revived Kordus at the scene before he was airlifted to hospital in Poznan, but he later died from his injuries.
Kania Gostyn pays tribute
The club from Gostyn announced the loss with a message of condolence for Kordus’s family, friends and those close to him.
“It is with immense sadness and profound disbelief that we learned of the death of our player, Oskar Kordus,” Kania Gostyn said. “On behalf of the entire Kania Gostyn community, we offer our sincere condolences to Oskar’s family, relatives and friends.
“At this exceptionally difficult time, we share their pain and keep them in our thoughts and hearts. Rest in peace, Oskar.”
Kordus’s death has brought grief to the lower-league football community in western Poland, where the young player was beginning his career with Kania Gostyn.
