Lisbon’s international window has taken an abrupt turn for Cristiano Ronaldo, with the Portuguese Football Federation placing the national-team captain under provisional suspension while a disciplinary case is examined.
The measure follows Ronaldo’s unexpected departure from Portugal’s training camp on 7 October, after differences with head coach Jorge Jesus. The federation has moved to keep the player out of action during the investigation, before any final disciplinary ruling is delivered.
Ronaldo had publicly apologised for leaving the squad and indicated that he was prepared to accept punishment for his conduct. That did not prevent the Portuguese game’s governing body from opening formal proceedings and applying an interim ban.
An urgent disciplinary procedure
The federation’s Non-Professional Section approved the start of proceedings on 9 October 2026, with the purpose of determining whether the events reported from 7 October carry disciplinary consequences.
Its statement said Ronaldo had initially been subject to an automatic precautionary suspension pending the formal establishment of the case. The body then ordered a separate non-automatic preventive suspension and classified the process as urgent.
The decision leaves Portugal’s most recognisable international unavailable while the federation establishes the facts surrounding his exit from camp and decides whether further sanctions are warranted.
