Strasbourg had put Paris Saint-Germain under the lights and under pressure, but a missed penalty did not stop the champions from turning the night around. PSG recovered from Giovanni Reyna’s early opener to win 3-1 and move provisionally to the top of Ligue 1 after matchday seven.
The Ligue 1 news
Reyna gave Strasbourg the lead in the 17th minute, leaving PSG with work to do at the Stade de la Meinau. Their clearest route back arrived after the hour when Désiré Doué’s shot struck the hand of Demba Diop inside the area.
Ousmane Dembélé, introduced shortly after the 60-minute mark, took responsibility from the spot. The 2025 Ballon d’Or winner dragged his 71st-minute effort wide, sending the ball across goal while goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen had also gone the right way.
It was PSG’s third successive penalty miss in regulation time. Doué had been denied by Nicolas Kocik during the 3-1 Ligue 1 victory over Le Mans the previous weekend, while Ferran Torres saw a penalty saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma in Wednesday’s 4-2 Champions League win over Manchester City.
The broader numbers underline an unusual weakness for Luis Enrique’s side: PSG have failed with nine of their last 19 penalties in official matches, excluding shoot-outs.
Yet Paris have been markedly more reliable when matches reach a shoot-out. Since March 2025, they have won every such contest against Liverpool, Tottenham, Flamengo, Marseille and Arsenal, converting 18 of 22 attempts.
Dembélé responded to his miss in the closing stages, striking powerfully in the 85th minute to find the net. By then, Illya Zabarnyi had already brought PSG level in the 77th minute, before Doué sealed the comeback in stoppage time.
Next appointment in France
PSG’s attention now turns quickly to the Champions League. Barcelona visit the Parc des Princes in three days, with Paris arriving on the back of another league win but still searching for greater certainty from the penalty spot.
