Qatar to Host 2026 Intercontinental Cup as Toluca Target PSG Final

Qatar will again provide the December stage for football’s intercontinental champions, with Toluca heading east as CONCACAF’s reigning title-holders and Paris Saint-Germain already waiting at the end of the route. FIFA has confirmed that the final three matches of the 2026 Intercontinental Cup will be played in the Gulf state, giving the Mexican club a defined path towards a possible final against the European representatives.

Three December dates in Qatar

The decisive portion of the competition will take place on 9, 12 and 16 December. Toluca, coached by Antonio Mohamed, enter the event through their CONCACAF Champions Cup success and will represent the region against champions from the other confederations.

  • 9 December: Toluca play the Derby of the Americas against the yet-to-be-decided 2026 Copa Libertadores winners.
  • 12 December: if they win their opening match, Toluca will meet the survivor of the contest involving the African, Asian and Oceanian representatives.
  • 16 December: the Intercontinental Cup final, with Paris Saint-Germain installed as Europe’s representative.

The identity of Toluca’s first opponent will not be known until the Copa Libertadores is settled. Their potential second-match opposition will emerge from the other confederation route; Mamelodi Sundowns are among the clubs who could feature along that path.

Toluca’s route towards PSG

For the club from the State of Mexico, the tournament offers a rare opportunity to test itself against champions from across the global game. Victory in the Derby of the Americas would keep the Red Devils in Qatar for the 12 December fixture, and another win would deliver a place in the final six days later.

PSG are already assigned to that final as the European entrant. A Toluca-PSG meeting would therefore require Mohamed’s side to win twice in Qatar, but it would place the CONCACAF champions in one of the biggest international fixtures in the club’s recent history, with a world-level trophy at stake.

A familiar FIFA setting

Qatar’s selection ends weeks of uncertainty around the venue and extends its established role in FIFA’s club calendar. The country staged the Club World Cup in 2019 and 2020, then hosted the concluding stages of the Intercontinental Cup in both 2024 and 2025.

The 2026 event will be the third successive edition of the current Intercontinental Cup format to finish in Qatar, where the new champion will be decided on 16 December.
