The 31-year-old England forward, currently without a club following an unsuccessful spell at Feyenoord, drove erratically during the rush-hour period on the M25 and M3 before the collision.
Motorists were forced to move out of Sterling’s path as the Lamborghini weaved across the motorway. The car eventually struck a metal gate, after which police arrested the former Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool player.
Officers confirmed the presence of nitrous oxide. Sterling subsequently entered guilty pleas to dangerous driving, possessing the substance and declining to give a sample after the crash.
Prosecutor Simo Jones said Sterling appeared “calm, withdrawn and lethargic”, while also moving restlessly. Jones added that his drooping eyelids suggested either tiredness or the effects of drugs, and said Sterling complained of being cold despite temperatures reaching 33C during a heatwave.
The case marks another difficult turn for a player who once sat among the Premier League’s most reliable wide forwards, but is now looking for his next club after leaving Feyenoord.
