Wyatt Langford’s sixth-inning trip around home plate looked more like a high-jump event than a routine sacrifice fly, and it fit the Rangers’ night at Globe Life Field: Texas found a way to get over the line.

Langford came home from third on Evan Carter’s fly ball to center in the sixth. Blue Jays center fielder Brett Bateman’s throw carried up the first-base side of the plate, forcing catcher Alejandro Kirk to move into Langford’s lane as the Rangers runner arrived at full speed.
Langford vaulted over the traffic, but the leap took him beyond the plate without a touch. In many cases, the missed plate would have been a footnote because the throw skipped away from Kirk. This one had another wrinkle.
Toronto pitcher Paul Sewald had followed the play and was positioned behind the plate to cover the errant throw. With Langford briefly past home, Sewald had an opening to apply the tag before the runner could return.
Langford recovered in time, diving back to get a hand on the plate just ahead of Sewald’s tag attempt. The run stood as Texas’ sixth of the evening, sealing a 6-2 Saturday-night win.
A jump with division weight
The Rangers’ escape at the plate carried a larger consequence with one week remaining in the regular season. The victory moved Texas past the Astros, its in-state rival, and into the American League West lead by itself.
For Langford, it was an unusual route to one run. For the Rangers, it was the kind of frantic, timely play that can matter well beyond a single box score in late September.
