Barcelona’s early-season journey has found an unlikely constant in front of goal: Raphinha. The 29-year-old has turned seven LaLiga appearances into 12 goals, while also scoring twice against Feyenoord in the Champions League, placing him at the centre of both Barça’s attack and the continental Golden Boot race.

Raphinha’s league return matches a Barcelona mark that had stood since 1943/44, when Mariano Martín reached the same total at this stage. His scoring pace has also carried him into second place in the current contest for Europe’s leading league scorer.
The Brazilian is pursuing the Golden Boot under a system that weighs goals by league strength. Strikes in Europe’s five major leagues receive two points each, goals in middle-ranked competitions are worth 1.5 points, and those in lower-ranked leagues earn one point.
That calculation gives players in summer-calendar competitions an early advantage, since Scandinavian seasons are already beyond their halfway points. Benin international Ede Okolo leads the standings after scoring 25 times in Latvia, splitting his season between Lukums and Liepaja.
Even so, Raphinha is the only player currently playing in one of Europe’s five biggest leagues to feature in the top 10. Sevilla’s Robbie Ure is the exception in the broader comparison: he scored 15 goals for Swedish side Sirius before moving to Spain.
Within the major leagues, LaLiga has produced the nearest challengers. Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé and Camello have each scored seven league goals. In Italy, Roma’s Donyell Malen has six in Serie A, while Erling Haaland leads the Premier League scoring chart on five. Haaland won the 2023 Golden Boot after scoring 36 league goals.
France and Germany have tighter early races. Ferran Torres of Paris Saint-Germain shares the Ligue 1 lead on four with Brest’s Doumbia, Marseille’s Gouiri and Paris FC’s Sinayoko. The Bundesliga’s leading group is also on four: Frankfurt’s Ebnoutalib, Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick and Freiburg’s Suzuki.

A Brazilian place in Golden Boot history
Should Raphinha finish the campaign as Europe’s leading league scorer, he would become only the third Brazilian to win the prize. Ronaldo Nazário did so after hitting 36 LaLiga goals for Barcelona in 1996/97, while Mário Jardel collected the award twice, in 1999 with Porto and in 2002 with Sporting CP.
Raphinha’s present rhythm would project to 66 LaLiga goals across a full season, a total beyond every existing benchmark. Lionel Messi’s 50 for Barcelona in 2011/12 remains the highest league tally associated with a Golden Boot-winning campaign.
