Brazil left Australia with a draw rather than a defeat, Rayan’s final-act header rescuing a 1-1 friendly that carried far more edge than its exhibition status suggested. Across a fiercely contested 95 minutes, the Socceroos matched the five-time world champions physically and defensively, and came within seconds of a memorable victory.
The visitors had attempted to set the rhythm before the interval, but Australia’s back line stood firm. Brazil did have the ball in the net shortly before half-time, only for the referee to rule it out after identifying a foul on centre-back Harry Souttar.
Souttar had already been at the heart of Australia’s most threatening first-half moment. In the 43rd minute, Alessandro Circati flicked on a corner and the tall defender arrived at the far post, but could not turn the chance home.
A set-piece contest decided at the end
Australia found its breakthrough in the 68th minute through Nestory Irankunda. Positioned outside the Brazilian penalty area for a free-kick, the forward curled his effort around the wall and inside the left-hand post, leaving Souza without a chance.
For much of the closing period, Irankunda’s strike appeared likely to settle the match. Brazil continued to press, however, and the equaliser arrived with virtually the last movement of the evening.
Raphinha delivered a corner into the middle in the 95th minute, where Rayan rose above his marker and directed a powerful bouncing header beyond goalkeeper Miles Beach. The goal made it 1-1 immediately before the final whistle, denying Australia the result it had defended so resolutely and ensuring Brazil escaped with a late share of the spoils.
