The Rays will carry Tampa Bay across their chest again when they take the field Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, rolling out a new gray road uniform in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Yankees.
It is more than a color change. Tampa Bay has not appeared on a Rays primary jersey since 2007, when the club dropped “Devil” from its name in a franchise-wide rebrand. The new road set makes the region the centerpiece once more.
Quick facts
- The gray road uniform debuts Tuesday in Game 2 of the Yankees doubleheader.
- Tampa Bay can secure its first AL East title since 2021 with one victory over New York.
- The new set replaces the Columbia blue road jersey with the burst logo.
- Fans voted on four possible concepts through social-media polling on March 6.
- Preorders begin today at the Bay Republic Team Store at Tropicana Field.
The road grays are the Rays’ first since 2022 and will become the club’s standard away uniform. They take the place of the Columbia blue tops, while the navy jerseys that have also been part of Tampa Bay’s road rotation remain part of the recent uniform history.
The design reaches back to the Devil Rays’ first seasons. The original franchise wore gray uniforms from 1998 through 2000, and the front gradient in this version draws from the early Devil Rays home look. That visual identity returned to the organization’s permanent style guide in 2023 during the club’s 25th-anniversary celebration.
There is a cleaner modern finish to the throwback influence. The ray beneath the Tampa Bay script has been shifted closer to the lettering, creating a more connected look across the front. The cap and batting helmet also echo the 1998 Devil Rays design, though much of the old black has been exchanged for the Rays’ current navy blue.
Chief executive officer Ken Babby framed the uniform as another marker of the organization’s connection to its home market, particularly as the new ownership group works toward a long-term Tampa ballpark project described as the “Forever Home.”
“These uniforms celebrate our long-term commitment to Tampa Bay,” Babby said. “When the club goes around the country, it does so with great admiration for home. Tampa Bay stays in our hearts, which is why it will be on our chest.”
The Rays already wear Tampa Bay on their City Connect uniforms, introduced in 2024, but those are limited-use jerseys generally seen in home dates. This road set puts the regional name into the everyday travel wardrobe for the first time in nearly 20 years.
Fans had a hand in the selection. The club posted four proposed designs for feedback on March 6, and the chosen gray uniform emerged from that process.
“We are especially proud that our fans helped select this design,” Babby said. “We love that they want the baseball world to see ‘Tampa Bay’ when we are playing on the road.”
There is no small stage for the first wear. The Rays arrive in the Bronx with an AL East clincher within reach, needing one win against the Yankees to claim the division for the first time since 2021. The new grays will make their first trip under those lights.
