The decision comes despite Lens recording one victory in the Champions League and lifting the Trophée des Champions during his short tenure. His league campaign, however, has lasted only four matches.
The precise reasons behind the impending split remain unclear. One factor appears to be Toppmöller’s stance over assistant coach Nelson Morgado, who has been pushed towards an exit by the club. Toppmöller reportedly wanted to stand by Morgado.
Lens may now turn to Yannick Cahuzac, who has worked as Toppmöller’s assistant since the start of the season and has been viewed for several weeks as a possible future head coach. The club appear to have decided to accelerate that plan after barely a month of competitive football.
The next appointment in France
Cahuzac is expected to take charge on an interim basis for the trip to the Principality, alongside Bilal Hamdi. Monaco versus Lens on Friday night will therefore be played under temporary management, with the Sang et Or seeking clarity after a sharp early-season rupture.
