Real Betis host Porto at La Cartuja on Wednesday 14 October, with kick-off at 21:00, in a Champions League league-phase meeting that can shape both clubs’ early route towards the knockout rounds. Betis arrive in Seville chasing a second straight European win; Porto, beaten on matchday one, are seeking their first points of the campaign.
What the night decided
The second round of league-phase fixtures gives Betis the chance to build immediately on their 3-2 away victory over Lille. Manuel Pellegrini’s side begin the night in 11th place on three points, inside the top eight positions that lead directly to the round of 16.
It is Betis’ first home fixture in this season’s Champions League and comes after more than two decades away from the competition’s leading places. Their confidence has also been strengthened domestically: they beat Osasuna 5-2 on Sunday in LaLiga.
For Porto, the trip to Andalusia carries a more urgent edge. Francesco Farioli’s team lost 2-0 at home to Manchester City in their European opener and sit 31st in the standings without a point. They are outside the top 24, the positions that keep clubs alive in the competition.
That continental setback contrasts sharply with Porto’s form in Portugal. They have won each of their opening eight league matches, most recently taking a 2-1 victory away to Marítimo last Saturday. A response in Seville would begin to repair their Champions League position and put their knockout hopes back on course.
A meeting of contrasting starts
Betis have started their European return with an away result of real value in France, while Porto must turn domestic dominance into a first Champions League return. The hosts can make La Cartuja a platform for a top-eight challenge; the visitors need to avoid allowing an opening defeat to become a damaging early sequence.
