Real Madrid opened their Women’s Champions League league-phase campaign with a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain at the Alfredo Di Stéfano, a result that left the home side with the sense that a major opportunity had slipped away. The Spanish club struck inside two minutes through Schröder and later created enough on the break to restore their lead, but Sakina Karchaoui’s late penalty ensured PSG took a point back to Paris.
The night began at full speed for Madrid. Just 98 seconds had elapsed when Caruso supplied Schröder, whose finish gave the hosts the ideal start against one of Europe’s most familiar contenders. PSG responded through their captain Karchaoui, the driving force in midfield and from the left, but Feller could not make the most of a pass played through the Madrid lines. Isabela then failed to direct a free-kick from the edge of the area on target.
There was also disruption in the stands. PSG supporters, positioned close to Real Madrid’s vocal home section, were moved for security reasons after unsporting gestures were exchanged between the two sets of fans.
Clear chances remained scarce for a period after the opening goal. Around the half-hour mark, Felicia sent an attempt well wide, and the interval did little to change the rhythm of the contest. PSG controlled possession after the restart, while Madrid defended deep and sought to turn the match with quick counters led by Eva Navarro’s pace, Caicedo’s invention and Schröder’s direct running.
Schröder could have put the match beyond PSG’s reach. The Swedish forward was denied by Kiedrzynek when through one-on-one, hit the post after Linda launched another counterattack, and later missed another opportunity created by Caicedo. Those moments became increasingly costly as the visitors pressed for an equaliser.
With 20 minutes remaining, the referee awarded PSG a penalty after Lakrar fouled Morissaint. Karchaoui stepped up and converted, rewarding the French side’s territorial dominance and levelling the score at 1-1.
Madrid tried to find a final response. Coach Quesada, who had started with Athenea, introduced Beerensteyn as the home side raised the tempo in search of a winner. But the decisive final touch did not arrive, leaving both clubs with one point from a match in which Madrid had started brilliantly but could not turn their counterattacking chances into a second goal.
