Real Madrid left Manchester with a 1-1 Champions League draw against Manchester City, a result that gave each side a point but could easily have brought more for the visitors after a sharp, high-pressure display and a late goal ruled out in stoppage time.
What the night decided
Linda Caicedo put Real Madrid ahead before the half-hour, only for Khadija Shaw to level shortly after the interval. Both teams had opportunities to take all three points, yet Japan goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita proved decisive for City, particularly when Caicedo broke clear in the second half.
The final controversy came with the last action. Silvia Cristóbal struck superbly, but the referee had already stopped play after judging that a City player had been knocked down as Madrid attempted to keep the move alive. The goal did not stand, leaving the contest level.
Pau Quesada made two notable selections from the start. Athenea del Castillo wore the captain’s armband in Europe for the first time, while Under-20 world champion Cristóbal came in at left-back for the injured Olga Carmona Levels.
Madrid began with the aggressive approach their coach had demanded. Just 20 seconds in, Sara Däbritz Schröder?
Schröder won possession high up the pitch and came close to creating an immediate opening, a warning City gradually answered in an end-to-end first half.
The hosts’ clearest early chance fell to Rose, whose header from a Hemp free-kick hit the crossbar and travelled along the goal line. Madrid then threatened through Schröder, who found room after a Caruso attempt had rebounded but saw Yamashita block her effort.
Caicedo’s breakthrough arrived before 30 minutes. Taking a pass from Jacinto, she drove into the area and punished hesitant defending with a powerful finish past Yamashita. Madrid managed the remainder of the first half well and reached the break in front.
City respond, Madrid keep pushing
Manchester City found their equaliser after the restart by disrupting Madrid’s build-up. A turnover gave Yui Hasegawa the chance to release Shaw, who beat Ann-Katrin Frohms with a low diagonal shot.
Both benches made three substitutions after the hour, with Quesada also having Sunday’s Clásico in mind. Caicedo, however, continued to drive Madrid forward. She had the chance to restore the lead on the counterattack, but Yamashita produced a crucial one-on-one save with an outstretched hand.
The City goalkeeper was called upon again soon afterwards, diving to repel an effort from Irune arriving from deep. The closing stages became increasingly frantic, with both sides seeking a winner but tension outweighing clear chances.
Madrid also welcomed back Bruun, making her first appearance since 8 February. Her return added a positive note to a night in which the visitors showed they could unsettle City away from home, even if the final whistle left them with only one point rather than the victory their late pressure appeared close to delivering.
