Real Madrid return to the Bernabéu next Wednesday with their Champions League momentum restored, after overturning Roma 4-3 at the Stadio Olimpico in a dramatic finish following the international break.
José Mourinho’s side now turn quickly towards the league phase’s third round of fixtures, scheduled across 20 and 21 October. Madrid will host RB Leipzig on Wednesday 21 October, with kick-off set for 21:00 local time.
Leipzig reunion carries recent European history
The German visitors are coached by Martín Demichelis, a familiar figure from Spanish football after Mallorca were relegated to the Segunda División last season.
Madrid and Leipzig last met in the 2023/24 Champions League round of 16, a tight tie that offered little comfort despite Madrid’s eventual progress. The Spanish club won 1-0 away in the first leg before drawing 1-1 in the return match at the Bernabéu, advancing 2-1 on aggregate.
That difficult knockout victory became one step on the route to Madrid’s 15th European Cup, secured later that season.
A rapid return to continental pressure
The visit of Leipzig comes only a week after Madrid’s comeback in Rome, where their 4-3 win showed the authority and late-game resilience required in a Champions League campaign gathering pace.
With the league phase already moving into its third matchday, the Bernabéu fixture gives Mourinho’s team an immediate opportunity to build on a significant away result and strengthen their position in Europe.
The match will be shown live on Movistar+ through its Champions League channels.
