Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu has become a symbol of football’s new stadium age, but images from a recent LaLiga night have highlighted a less polished side of the vast Chamartín venue.
During Real Madrid’s match against Rayo Vallecano, a supporter filmed what appeared to be a rodent moving through a trench inside the stadium. The recording was subsequently circulated widely on social media.

The Bernabéu stands at Avenida de Concha Espina 1 in Madrid’s Chamartín district, close to the Paseo de la Castellana. Since opening in 1947, it has remained one of European football’s defining grounds, repeatedly reshaped as Real Madrid expanded its ambitions on and off the pitch.
The redevelopment launched in 2019 brought a redesigned exterior, additional areas within the venue, a new playing surface and equipment for its maintenance. A retractable roof was also installed, allowing the stadium to host a broader range of events beyond matchdays.
Those changes have placed the Bernabéu among the continent’s most recognisable modern arenas. The viral footage, however, offered an unwelcome reminder that even Madrid’s showcase stadium is not entirely beyond everyday stadium problems.
