In Barcelona, where Raphinha has become one of the defining figures of the season, Rodri has argued that the Brazilian’s rise deserves recognition far beyond Catalonia. The Spanish midfielder believes Raphinha, alongside Pedri, belongs in the Ballon d’Or conversation after a campaign that left a particular impression on him.
Rodri’s Ballon d’Or case for Barcelona pair
Speaking about the leading individual award in the game, Rodri placed two Barcelona players among the names he feels should receive nominations.
- He said Pedri should be included without hesitation, describing him as one of football’s outstanding players.
- He also backed Raphinha for a place among the contenders.
- Rodri named the Brazil international as the player who had surprised him most during the season.
“Pedri and Raphinha should both be nominated for the Ballon d’Or, without any doubt,” Rodri said. “Pedri is among the best in the world, while Raphinha is the player who has surprised me the most.”
Madrid interest and a Barcelona decision
Rodri also reflected on the transfer process that brought him to Barcelona, recounting Real Madrid’s early attempts to persuade him to move to the Spanish capital.
He said Madrid had made its interest clear from the beginning and submitted proposals in pursuit of his signature. “Madrid showed interest from the first moment,” he said, explaining that the offers were aimed at signing him.
Mourinho conversation during the pursuit
José Mourinho was also involved in discussions with Rodri during that period. The Portuguese coach outlined his ideas and explained the role he envisaged for the midfielder within his team.
Despite the approaches, Rodri opted for Barcelona. His decision was shaped by the sporting project and by the prospect of developing while taking responsibility in a squad built around younger players.
