Rybakina Defends Ningbo Title Against Fernandez in High-Stakes Final

Elena Rybakina will defend her Ningbo Open crown against Leylah Fernandez after both players came through Saturday’s semifinals in straight sets, setting a final that carries 500 ranking points and a significant year-end No. 1 implication.

Ningbo final set after contrasting routes

  1. Top-seeded Rybakina, the world No. 1, beat sixth seed Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5 to reach a second consecutive championship match in Ningbo.
  2. Fernandez, ranked No. 30, followed with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Marie Bouzkova, putting the Canadian into the 10th WTA Tour final of her career and her second of the season.
  3. The singles title match is scheduled for not before 5 p.m. local time on Saturday, Oct. 24, following the doubles final at 2:30 p.m.
  4. Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Cristina Bucsa, the top-seeded doubles team, will meet Fanny Stollar and Desirae Krawczyk for the doubles trophy.

Rybakina tested despite straight-set semifinal

Rybakina’s 6-3, 7-5 scoreline against Shnaider did not fully reflect the resistance she encountered. The defending champion required 11 set points before finally closing the opening set, then was broken at love when serving for the match in the second. She recovered to finish the job and has surrendered only one set across the tournament.

Her week began with a bye, followed by a shortened second-round match when Polina Kudermetova retired while down 5-0 in the first set. Qualifier Katarzyna Kawa then pushed Rybakina to three sets in the quarterfinals before the No. 1 seed cleared the last-four hurdle against Shnaider.

A victory in the final would give Rybakina a fourth title this season and the 15th of her career. She would also become a repeat champion at a second event, having retained her Stuttgart title earlier this year. It would, however, be the first occasion on which she has won the same tournament in consecutive years.

Rybakina is defending the full 500 points from last year’s Ningbo title, and another trophy would strengthen her position in the race to finish the season at world No. 1.

Fernandez brings Asian swing momentum

Fernandez has spent considerably more time on court during her run. Before the semifinal, she negotiated three straight three-set victories over seventh seed Elise Mertens, Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Ekaterina Alexandrova, needing nearly eight hours in total to reach the final four.

Her opening win over Mertens was particularly tight: Fernandez trailed 5-3 in the deciding set before taking the final four games. Bouzkova then extended the Canadian for almost two hours even though Fernandez completed the match in two sets.

The result continues a productive Asian swing for Fernandez, who has compiled an 11-2 record since it began. She is chasing a second title in as many months after winning the Singapore Tennis Open in September. A Ningbo triumph would be her seventh career singles title and her third at WTA 500 level.

Head-to-head points to a close final

The pair have divided their four hard-court meetings, while Rybakina won their only encounter this season, a three-hour Stuttgart quarterfinal on clay.

That Stuttgart contest ended 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (6) for Rybakina, who erased two match points during her comeback. The Kazakh struck 51 winners but also committed 40 unforced errors, converting four of eight break opportunities. Fernandez made three breaks from 14 chances in that match.
