Linz provided a difficult opening night for Israel in UEFA Nations League Group 3, where a 3-1 defeat to Austria was shaped by Saied Abu Farchi’s dismissal after the Israeli forward celebrated his equaliser by mimicking a rifle with a corner flag.
Israel had recovered from going behind at the Raiffeisen Arena, but Abu Farchi’s moment of relief quickly became the match’s decisive controversy. The 20-year-old was already booked when referee Georgi Kabakov issued a second yellow card for the celebration, leaving the visitors with 10 men for the closing stages.
Austria regain control after Israel’s equaliser
Austria took the lead two minutes before half-time when Romano Schmid converted from the penalty spot. Israel responded soon after the restart, with Abu Farchi arriving in the area to head home and level the score.
Instead of launching an Austrian response alone, however, the goal also brought Abu Farchi’s departure. The forward ran to a corner flag, picked it up and made a gesture suggesting he was firing a weapon. Kabakov deemed it punishable and showed him another yellow card, automatically followed by a red.
Abu Farchi appeared surprised by the decision, but his earlier caution meant there was no scope for Israel to retain him on the pitch. The incident prompted widespread discussion online as footage of the celebration and dismissal circulated, again drawing attention to football’s restrictions on provocative celebrations and gestures involving weapons.
Austria made their numerical advantage count late on. Phillipp Mwene restored the home side’s lead in the 90th minute, before Sasa Kalajdzic added a third goal during stoppage time.
Israel face a demanding Group 3 schedule
The result leaves Israel at the bottom of the Group 3 standings after their first Nations League outing. Their effort to recover begins on Sunday against Ireland, before a trip to Kosovo on Thursday, 1 October.
For Israel, the immediate task is to find points after the Austrian setback. Abu Farchi’s equalising header showed a route back into the match in Linz, but his sending-off altered the contest just when the visitors had restored parity.
