Sarri Warns Atalanta Against Conference League Favourites Tag

Atalanta begin another European chapter under Maurizio Sarri on Thursday, with Pafos arriving in Bergamo for the club’s first appearance in the Conference League. The competition may place the Nerazzurri among its leading names, but their coach has refused to let the occasion be framed as a straightforward route forward.

The decision

Sarri has urged caution before Atalanta’s home opener, questioning the idea that his side should be considered favourites for the trophy. In his view, the ranking used to shape that judgment reflects previous campaigns rather than the current condition of the teams involved.

“We are not favourites,” Sarri said. “The ranking is based on past results, not on the present.”

It is a different European setting for Atalanta, who enter the third UEFA competition for the first time. Yet the club also carries the memory of winning the Europa League under Gian Piero Gasperini, and Sarri acknowledged that the possibility of adding another continental prize is naturally appealing.

Still, he expects resistance from Pafos despite Atalanta having home advantage. Sarri stressed that European matches demand patience, particularly on the opening night of a league phase.

“We will have to suffer,” he said. “European games are always difficult, especially the first one.”

Atalanta will be without Giorgio Scalvini. Sarri indicated that the defender could also miss the forthcoming Serie A meeting with Milan, although he left the situation open for reassessment.

Sunday’s picture

Scalvini’s availability is therefore an issue extending beyond the Conference League debut. Atalanta must first negotiate Pafos in Bergamo, then turn their attention to Milan, with Sarri balancing the immediate European demand against the rhythm of the domestic season.
