Spain’s World Cup winners completed their long celebration day in Madrid with a packed Cibeles Square event, bringing the trophy from official receptions and an open-top bus parade to a final night with supporters, music and speeches from the squad.
World Cup Final Homecoming in Madrid
The champions had first visited the Royal Palace of Zarzuela and La Moncloa before travelling through the capital by bus. The World Cup remained close to the players throughout the day, and the celebrations concluded at Plaza de Cibeles, where thousands gathered after following the team’s route through Madrid.
Government estimates put the total number of people accompanying the national team around the city at two million. Madrid mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida welcomed the players on stage and kissed the World Cup trophy.
Each member of the squad was introduced with a chosen song. David Raya and Marc Pubill were first up, arriving to music by Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Ñengo Flow. Marcos Llorente had Julio Iglesias, while Fabián Ruiz and Gavi were welcomed with songs associated with Leiva and Bad Bunny. Ferran Torres, described during the celebrations as the final’s key figure, was among the anticipated arrivals. The biggest stage reception, however, was reserved for Rodri. His teammates formed a guard of honour and gathered around the Manchester City midfielder, who dedicated the trophy to the supporters and shouted: “Long live Spain and long live the King.”
Coach Luis de la Fuente appeared wearing a Spain scarf, was tossed into the air by the players and sang one of his favourite Julio Iglesias songs. He later thanked the public and praised the group around him.
“Spain has backed us and come here for us,” De la Fuente said. “We are fortunate to have 26 outstanding people, who are also outstanding footballers—the best in the world. It is an honour to coach them and share this with my staff. Together we are stronger. Do not forget that.”
Marc Cucurella stepped forward before the coach’s speech and led supporters in a chant built around his name, paella and Erling Haaland. Rodri then reflected on the scale of the achievement, saying the squad had initially felt as if it had won the Coca-Cola Cup rather than the World Cup. He also asked the crowd to remember a person important to him and called for a chant in support of Ferran, whom he described as a player unfairly criticised before making Spanish football history.
The stage programme continued with Arde Bogotá, while Borja Iglesias introduced the national-team staff who had worked behind the scenes. He told the crowd that those staff members were among the most important people of the World Cup because they had cared for the players every day and helped prepare them to compete. Borja Iglesias then took over DJ duties as the squad danced.
Ibai Llanos introduced Aitana, who performed “Superestrella”, a song that had accompanied the players during their camp. She posed with the World Cup trophy and the squad, repeating a role she had also played in Spain’s celebration after the previous European Championship. Ana Mena and Lola Índigo performed “Pa ti Toa”, while Shakira sent a congratulatory video message.
The night also included a tribute to María Caamaño, who had already been in the thoughts of the players during the team’s time in the United States.
