In Las Rozas, on the northern edge of Madrid, Spain have chosen continuity after a World Cup triumph. Luis de la Fuente has agreed a new deal that will keep him as head coach of the men’s national team until 2032, extending a spell that has taken the country to its second world title.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation approved the extension unanimously at a board meeting led by president Rafael Louzán at the Ciudad del Fútbol. De la Fuente’s renewed mandate covers a long international cycle, including Euro 2028, Euro 2032 and the 2030 World Cup, which Spain will stage alongside Portugal, Morocco, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.
Spain’s decision follows their 1-0 final victory over Argentina in the United States, a result that delivered the 2026 World Cup and added a second global crown to the nation’s record. The federation sees the agreement as a way of carrying the momentum from that campaign into the next major tournaments.
A longer horizon for Spain
Louzán described the new contract as a commitment to “stability and trust”, built around confidence in De la Fuente and the sporting programme under his leadership. He said the federation wanted a project capable of spanning several years and the major competitions ahead.
The federation president also pointed to De la Fuente’s long association with the Spanish set-up. After 14 years within the organisation, Louzán called him the most decorated coach in the history of the national side and said he had earned the prospect of a lengthy future with the federation.
The board meeting also confirmed an extension for Jesús Velasco, who will remain Spain’s futsal national-team coach through to 2029. Both renewals place Spain’s senior football and futsal teams under contracts designed to run well beyond the immediate aftermath of the World Cup.
