Spain’s national-team project will carry on under Luis de la Fuente, with the 61-year-old coach agreeing a new contract that keeps him in charge through 2032. After a run that has taken La Roja from Nations League winners to European champions and then world champions in July, the federation has opted for continuity across the next major international cycle.
The news from the club
The Royal Spanish Football Federation has extended De la Fuente’s deal until 2032. The agreement covers the forthcoming World Cup as well as the next two European Championships, giving Spain a long-term framework under the coach who has overseen its recent return to the summit of the international game.
Federation president Rafael Louzán described the renewal as a commitment to stability and faith in the sporting programme led by De la Fuente.
“We wanted a project built on stability and confidence,” Louzán said. “This offer reflects our belief in Luis de la Fuente and the sporting project he leads, for a multi-year cycle of competitions and major tournaments. He is the most decorated coach in the history of the national team and, after 14 years with us, he deserves a long future at the federation.”
De la Fuente’s connection with Spain long predates his appointment to the senior post in 2023. He worked extensively through the federation’s youth sides, reaching an Olympic final and winning titles at under-15 and under-19 level before taking over the full national team.
His senior tenure began with the UEFA Nations League title, followed by the European Championship a year later. The World Cup success in July completed the most significant achievement of his spell and prompted Spain to secure his future well beyond the current tournament cycle.
The road to 2032
The new deal places De la Fuente at the centre of Spain’s plans for the next World Cup and two subsequent Euros. It also preserves the coaching continuity that has linked the current senior side with the youth development system from which he emerged.
