Spain’s under-18 side continued its productive week beside Lake Geneva, defeating Brazil 3-1 in Nyon on Sunday to add another notable result to its UEFA Friendship Cup campaign. The tournament is serving as part of the group’s build-up towards the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar this November.
David Cubillo’s team had already opened with a 2-1 win over Côte d’Ivoire, and followed that result with an assured performance against Brazil. Spain built its advantage before half-time through Yeremaiah Ramos of Real Madrid and Christian Imga of Baskonia, before Mateo Sobral, the Celta player, completed the scoring after the interval.
Iu Martínez, introduced on 72 minutes in place of Barcelona midfielder Roberto Tomás, supplied the pass for Sobral’s goal. Martínez was one of four Barcelona players to take part in the match, alongside three starters: right-back Raúl Expósito, left-back Jordi Pesquer and attacking midfielder Tomás.
Pesquer left the pitch in the 80th minute after receiving a yellow card, while Tomás made way for Martínez eight minutes earlier. Barcelona’s Baba Kourouma and Michal Zuk remained unused substitutes. The squad is also without its injured leading figure, Ebrima Tunkara.
Spain now meet Canada on Wednesday before the decisive cross-group fixtures. Their opposing section includes Egypt, South Korea, England and Colombia, with the young Spanish side carrying momentum from two wins against African and South American opposition in Switzerland.
