Stutzle Powers Senators to 4-1 Road Win Over Bruins

Tim Stutzle broke the game open early, scoring twice in 1:43 of the first period as the Ottawa Senators skated out of TD Garden with a 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Monday.

  • Stutzle finished with two goals and an assist for Ottawa, now 2-0-0.
  • Michael Amadio posted a goal and an assist. Drake Batherson added a breakaway goal.
  • Linus Ullmark stopped all 10 shots he faced over the first two periods before giving way to Samuel Ersson for the third.
  • Ersson made eight saves in his Senators debut. Ottawa acquired him from the Toronto Maple Leafs on June 26.
  • James Hagens scored Boston’s lone goal, his second in the NHL. Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves.
  • The Bruins fell to 2-2-0 and came up empty on four power-play opportunities.

Ottawa’s penalty kill delivered the first punch. With Boston on the man advantage, Amadio jumped a loose pass and turned it into a 2-on-1. He slid the puck across to Stutzle at the right-side hash marks, and the Senators center ripped a one-timer over Swayman’s stick at 7:39.

Stutzle struck again at 9:22, just three seconds after the Bruins’ power play ended. He picked off another pass and joined a 2-on-1 from the left circle. His first shot attempt did not come cleanly, but he recovered the puck and tucked it inside the short side for a 2-0 edge.

The Senators kept forcing Boston into costly mistakes in the second. Stutzle created a turnover in Ottawa’s end, then sent Batherson away alone. Batherson went to the backhand and beat Swayman 1:06 into the period.

Amadio made it 4-0 at 5:19. After another Bruins breakout failed, Shane Pinto fed him with a backhand pass into the low slot, where Amadio hammered home the one-timer.

Hagens got Boston on the board 3:30 into the third. Ersson mishandled the puck near the corner, and Hagens tried to send it toward Matthew Poitras in front. The puck instead caromed off the sliding Ottawa goaltender and crossed the line.
