Iga Swiatek moved into the Wuhan Open quarterfinals for a second straight year on Thursday night, defeating lucky loser Ashlyn Krueger 6-1, 6-4 in 1 hour and 34 minutes to claim the 150th WTA 1000 victory of her career.
The Polish former World No. 1 reached the landmark faster than any of the seven players to have recorded 150 wins at this level since the WTA 1000 category began in 2009. Her 187 matches put her ahead of the previous pace-setters, and she is only the third player since 1990 to earn 150 victories across her first 50 Tier I or WTA 1000 main draws, after Martina Hingis and Serena Williams.
Swiatek’s run in Wuhan has also tightened the contest for qualification for the WTA Finals in Indian Wells. Karolina Muchova, who held the last qualifying position entering the day, was beaten by Diana Shnaider in the last 16, while Swiatek continued to add valuable points.
“The closing part of the season is demanding, so recovery has become a daily priority,” Swiatek said on court. “I am pleased to be winning because my tennis feels better than it did earlier in the year. I am ready to keep pushing and happy to be through to the quarterfinals.”
Pressure points decide Krueger contest
Krueger produced 16 winners to Swiatek’s nine, but the American’s attacking intent came at a heavy price. She finished with 46 unforced errors, 19 more than her opponent, allowing Swiatek to maintain control despite not producing her cleanest display.
The decisive contrast came on Swiatek’s serve. Krueger fashioned eight break-point chances but converted only one, with Swiatek saving seven break points when the pressure mounted.
The result lifted Swiatek to 9-0 in career matches against lucky losers. Eight of those wins have come in straight sets; her only match taken to a deciding set against a lucky loser was against Zheng Qinwen in San Diego in 2022.
Quarterfinal draw and WTA Finals race
Swiatek has now made seven WTA 1000 quarterfinals in 2026, more than any other player this season after moving beyond Elena Rybakina’s total. It will be her 32nd career quarterfinal at this tournament level, with only Aryna Sabalenka, on 33, having reached more among active players.
The 2023 WTA Finals champion is pursuing a fifth consecutive appearance at the season-ending event. She has qualified in every season since her debut in 2021, although she began this week projected to occupy an alternate place.
In the Wuhan last eight, Swiatek will meet either Ann Li or Janice Tjen. Li reached this stage after upsetting top seed Sabalenka in the second round on Wednesday.
Li owns the only previous meeting with Swiatek, advancing when the Pole retired during their Madrid match earlier this season. Swiatek has played Tjen once, taking their Doha encounter in February in straight sets.
