Tottenham Hotspur found the extra gear when the evening had begun to tighten around them, beating Coventry City 3-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to close Premier League matchweek seven. James Maddison’s early stunner was cancelled out by Jack Rudoni soon after the interval, but Omar Marmoush restored Spurs’ lead before Ben Davies settled it deep into eight minutes of added time.
Key takeaways
- Maddison opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a right-footed effort into the top-left corner after Mohammed Kudus supplied the pass.
- Coventry levelled four minutes after half-time as Rudoni finished Brandon Thomas-Asante’s counter-attack.
- Marmoush struck from outside the box in the 58th minute, with Andy Robertson creating the chance.
- Davies made the points secure in the 96th minute, drilling a low left-footed shot beyond the goalkeeper following Dominic Solanke’s assist.
- Spurs lost Robertson, Tosin Adarabioyo and Marmoush to injury during a demanding second half.
Spurs make their early pressure tell
The visitors were not content merely to make up the numbers. Brandon Thomas-Asante dragged an early attempt wide after Sidiki Cherif had helped the ball into his path, while Coventry also saw efforts from Thomas-Asante and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto blocked in the opening exchanges. Jan Paul van Hecke had to concede a pair of corners as Coventry made a purposeful start.
Tottenham carried the greater threat once their passing began to settle. Solanke had a shot blocked from close range, Archie Gray saw another effort charged down after Maddison’s set-up, and a succession of offside flags interrupted moves involving Solanke, Kudus and Robertson.
The breakthrough arrived in the 14th minute and was worth waiting for. Kudus found Maddison outside the penalty area, and the midfielder sent a right-footed finish into the top-left corner. Spurs had their lead, though not quite the calm that can sometimes follow one.
Coventry remained combative. Caleb Yirenkyi was booked after a foul on Gray, while Solanke also went into the book for a dangerous challenge on Thomas-Asante. Cherif required treatment midway through the half but continued. Jack Rudoni and Jay Dasilva later received yellow cards for Coventry, with Dasilva punished shortly before the interval.
There were chances for the hosts to add to the score before the break. Maddison had a shot blocked after Gray’s pass, and Solanke lifted a left-footed attempt over from the middle of the box after Sandro Tonali played him through. Coventry’s best response came through Cherif, whose long-range strike was blocked, and a corner forced by Micky van de Ven.
Coventry respond before Spurs finish strongly
Coventry came out of the dressing room with intent and were level in the 49th minute. Rudoni first sent a counter-attacking chance narrowly wide after Caleb Yirenkyi’s pass, but he soon had another opportunity. Thomas-Asante led the break and fed Rudoni, who finished low from close range on the left side of the area.
Spurs replied with the sort of pressure expected of a home side with the game slipping away. Van de Ven and Tonali both missed from a Kudus corner, while Marmoush had a low shot saved. The forward then put Tottenham back in front in the 58th minute, taking Robertson’s assist and placing a right-footed strike from outside the area into the right side of the net.
Coventry made changes on the hour, introducing Frank Onyeka for Yirenkyi and Taiwo Awoniyi for Cherif. Tottenham continued to create openings: Kudus fired wide from distance and later curled narrowly past the top corner after Gray’s pass; Solanke had an effort blocked; and Mateus Fernandes tested the goalkeeper with a low shot from outside the box.
The visitors did not disappear. Awoniyi headed wide from Milan van Ewijk’s cross, Bobby Thomas had a header blocked, and Ethan Pinnock also headed off target. Coventry brought on Gustavo Hamer and Ephron Mason-Clark in the 78th minute, while Kaine Kesler-Hayden replaced Rudoni nine minutes later. Awoniyi missed again from close range late on, and Thomas headed a Hamer free-kick wide in the 90th minute.
Tottenham’s own evening was complicated by injuries. Robertson and Adarabioyo both departed in the 69th minute, with Davies and Fernandes coming on, while Conor Gallagher replaced Maddison. Marmoush was forced off in the 87th minute and Mathys Tel took his place; Dejan Kulusevski also entered for Kudus.
There was still time for Tel to miss narrowly after Antonín Kinsky’s pass, and for Coventry to win a late corner, but Spurs delivered the decisive final touch. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Solanke laid the ball back to Davies outside the area. The substitute struck a low left-footed effort inside the left post to make it 3-1, leaving the late Coventry push with nothing but a long journey home.
