Old Trafford was left with a familiar sense of frustration on Saturday as Manchester United conceded deep into stoppage time to draw 1-1 with Tottenham in the sixth round of the Premier League.
United had appeared to have done enough when Bryan Mbeumo put them ahead in the 73rd minute, finishing from Matheus Cunha’s assist after the home side had found greater control following the interval. Yet Tottenham, despite playing the closing stages with 10 men, kept pushing and found a late route back into the match.
The visitors had created the more threatening opportunities before half-time, but neither side broke the deadlock during a goalless opening 45 minutes. United returned with more purpose after the restart and eventually took the lead through Mbeumo.
Five minutes later, Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off after an incident involving Luke Shaw. The dismissal appeared to leave Spurs facing an uphill task in Manchester, but they continued to press for an equaliser.
Solanke strikes in added time
Tottenham’s persistence was rewarded in the second minute of added time. Dominic Solanke rose to head home Sandro Tonali’s cross, denying United a home victory and fixing the score at 1-1.
United attempted to force a response in the remaining moments but could not restore their advantage, leaving the hosts to reflect on two points lost.
The draw takes Manchester United to six points, placing them 12th in the table. Tottenham move onto three points and climb to 18th, although they remain in the relegation places and are still without a league win.
United now turn towards a Champions League meeting with Atlético de Madrid. Tottenham will use the international break to prepare for their next Premier League fixture against Coventry City.
