Toulouse Fight Back to Hold Ligue 1 Leaders Monaco in 2-2 Draw

Monaco left the Stade Louis II with the feeling of a lead slipping through their hands, as Toulouse recovered from two goals down to draw 2-2 and narrow the gap at the top of Ligue 1. The principality side had controlled the first half, but a difficult spell after the interval undid their earlier work.

A strong Monaco opening in the principality

Still unbeaten after six league rounds, Monaco appeared on course for another convincing result when Edan Diop took centre stage before the break. The hosts established a two-goal advantage through Diop’s finishing and creativity, only for Toulouse to find a route back after half-time.

  • In the 30th minute, Aleksandr Golovin delivered a cross which Diop headed beyond goalkeeper Guillaume Restes.
  • Diop then turned provider nine minutes later, laying the ball into the path of Matthis Abline, who struck a volley for 2-0.
  • The draw was Monaco’s second of the campaign, following their earlier stalemate against Strasbourg.

Toulouse find a way back

The visitors were given fresh belief when Nazinho conceded a penalty inside the area. Casper Tengstedt converted from the spot, reducing the deficit and changing the rhythm of the contest.

Toulouse pressed on after that goal and were level around the hour mark, when Sion Oppong completed the comeback. Monaco, who had looked comfortable during the opening 45 minutes, could not restore their advantage.

Ansu Fati returns but cannot settle it

Filipe Luis introduced Ansu Fati in the 75th minute, handing the former Barcelona forward his first appearance of the season. Fati had been absent after suffering a calf problem during pre-season.

He had an opportunity to win the match late on. Cutting in from the left side of the penalty area after beating an opponent with a feint, Fati saw his shot blocked before it could threaten the Toulouse goal.

The title picture tightens

Monaco remain first, but the draw has reduced their margin over Lille to one point after Lille defeated Lyon 1-0. Paris Saint-Germain, following a 3-1 victory against Le Mans, are three points behind the leaders.

  • Monaco: unbeaten in six Ligue 1 matches.
  • Lille: one point behind Monaco after winning against Lyon.
  • Paris Saint-Germain: three points off the summit after beating Le Mans.
