Trabzonspor Appoint Thomas Reis After Fatih Tekke Exit

Trabzon, on Türkiye’s Black Sea coast, is preparing to turn the page quickly. Mohamed Salah’s arrival after leaving Liverpool was meant to open a new chapter, but the early turbulence that ended with Fatih Tekke’s controversial departure has brought another change to the dugout.

Trabzonspor have appointed German coach Thomas Reis on a two-year contract. The 52-year-old takes over a squad that includes Salah and Fabinho, with little time to settle before a demanding first assignment against Galatasaray on Saturday.

Quick facts

  • Thomas Reis has signed a two-year deal with Trabzonspor.
  • He is set to earn €1 million in the first season and €1.2 million in the second.
  • Reis arrives after a two-month spell at Bulgarian club Ludogorets.
  • His Ludogorets record was seven wins, three draws and one defeat from 11 matches.
  • His first match in charge will be against Galatasaray on Saturday.

Reis had initially been expected to agree terms only until the end of the season, but Trabzonspor have instead committed to a longer arrangement. The financial package rises from €1 million in year one to €1.2 million for the following campaign.

The coach is no stranger to football in Türkiye. Before his short stay in Bulgaria with Ludogorets, he worked at Samsunspor, giving him previous experience of the intensity and scrutiny surrounding the Turkish game.

His spell in Razgrad was brief but productive: Ludogorets won seven of his 11 matches, drawing three and losing once. Trabzonspor will now hope that momentum can travel across the Black Sea as the club seeks stability following Tekke’s exit.

Galatasaray offer an immediate examination for the new coach and his rebuilt project. With Salah and Fabinho among the best-known figures in the squad, Reis begins under a bright continental spotlight rather than with a gentle introduction.
