Valencia Hold Talks With Cruz Azul Midfielder Erik Lira’s Agent

In Paterna, on Valencia’s training-ground outskirts, a Mexican midfielder’s European route has returned to view. Erik Lira remained with Cruz Azul after Monaco were unable to clear a non-EU squad place during the summer, but his representative’s visit to Valencia on Wednesday, 14 October, has added a LaLiga possibility to the picture.

The news from the club

Tarek Sebiat, the Europe-based representative for the StayPro agency and Lira’s agent, visited Valencia’s Ciudad Deportiva de Paterna and held a short meeting with sporting director Braulio Vázquez.

No details of the discussion have emerged and there is no confirmation of talks, a bid or a formal Valencia move for the Mexico international. Sebiat declined to elaborate when approached after the meeting. Asked specifically about Lira, he smiled and said: “A good player, no comment.”

The encounter comes after Javier Aguirre, Valencia’s coach, spoke warmly about the Cruz Azul midfielder at his presentation. Aguirre called Lira a friend and described him as an outstanding footballer, adding that he is among several players in Mexico capable of playing in Europe.

The Valencia manager, however, would not be drawn on whether the club could pursue him, saying he could not give a specific answer on that question.

A European window still open

Monaco had been one of the principal European destinations expected for Lira during the summer. The Ligue 1 side could not make room for another non-European Union player, preventing a transfer, although the club left open the prospect of revisiting the situation in December.

Valencia are now another club linked through the presence of Lira’s agent in Paterna, though the visit alone does not establish an active negotiation.

Lira is under contract at Cruz Azul until June 2029. The Mexico City club had been prepared to consider a strong European offer, with Monaco most recently reported to have been willing to pay €12 million. That figure is regarded as the likely minimum required for Cruz Azul to release their captain.

His current market valuation is €14 million, up €5 million since December. Cruz Azul’s tenth Liga MX crown in the Clausura 2026 and Lira’s performances for Mexico at the World Cup have contributed to that rise.
