In Zeist, where the Netherlands have gathered to begin again after their World Cup disappointment, Virgil van Dijk has brought an unresolved argument from the tournament into the national-team camp. The Liverpool defender and Dutch captain confronted journalist Valentijn Driessen before the Nations League meeting with Germany, rejecting claims about his influence inside the Oranje dressing room.
The news from the club
The Netherlands are entering a rebuilt phase following their Round of 16 exit against Morocco at the World Cup. Ronald Koeman was removed from his post after that defeat, with Xavi Hernández subsequently appointed as the new national-team coach.
Van Dijk has returned as captain under Xavi, with Germany next on the Nations League schedule. Yet the focus at his press conference shifted from the coming match to comments made by Driessen, a De Telegraaf journalist and columnist, during the World Cup.
Driessen had suggested that Van Dijk pushed the coaching staff to alter the team’s tactical setup. The centre-back strongly denied the accusation and objected to claims that he had damaged Dutch football.
“To say that I ruined Dutch football is baseless and ridiculous,” Van Dijk said. “The plan worked for 89 minutes, and I did not make that decision alone. We acted collectively; we are a team.”
Tension in the Zeist press room
The exchange did not end with Van Dijk’s initial response. When Driessen sought to defend the view expressed in his column and accused the defender of being distant, the Netherlands captain answered more sharply.
Van Dijk insisted that he has maintained a professional relationship with the media, but said there had to be a response when reporting crossed into false allegations aimed at harming his career.
“I have always been open and professional with the media,” he said. “But when untruths are spread simply to damage my career, it is necessary to speak plainly. We cannot remain silent in the face of those accusations.”
The Nations League calendar
The appointment of Xavi gives the Netherlands a new figure on the touchline as they attempt to move on from their Morocco defeat. Germany provide the first significant Nations League test of this new chapter, with Van Dijk remaining at the centre of a side seeking a stronger response after the World Cup.
