Viking Stavanger turned a Champions League night at the Lyse Arena into a test of Bayern Munich’s authority, holding the German side to a remarkable 3-3 draw after twice taking the lead and striking again after Bayern had gone in front.
On the artificial surface in Stavanger, the Norwegian hosts paired a disciplined defensive block with rapid counter-attacks and were rewarded for a fearless performance against Vincent Kompany’s side. Stensness opened the scoring inside three minutes, Christiansen restored Viking’s advantage before the interval, and Haugen delivered the final response after Bayern had appeared to have completed the turnaround.
Viking’s fast start shakes Bayern
Bayern arrived without the injured Manuel Neuer, leaving Urbig in goal, while Karl started in place of the still-unfit Musiala. The visitors soon found themselves behind when Tripic’s corner was met by Stensness, whose header beat Urbig.
Kompany’s team responded by dominating possession, but their attacking commitment created the spaces Viking had planned to exploit. A quick three-pass break released Christiansen one-on-one with Urbig, and the Danish forward finished left-footed to make it 2-0 and ignite the home crowd.
Harry Kane led Bayern’s reply. Haugen’s foul on Laimer brought a penalty, which Kane converted, before the England striker headed in from Kimmich’s delivery to level the contest with around 30 minutes remaining.
Bayern lead, then lose Olise
With momentum shifting towards the visitors, Kane played the ball wide to Laimer, whose low cross was turned in from close range by Luis Díaz. Bayern had recovered from two goals down and looked set to leave Norway with the win.
But the match swung again when Michael Olise was sent off for striking Tripic in the face with the ball. Bayern’s numerical disadvantage gave Viking another opening, and Haugen took it to secure the hosts’ deserved equaliser.
The 3-3 result gave Stavanger a European night to remember and left Bayern with a reminder that control of the ball offers no guarantee of control of a Champions League match.
