Villarreal Host Napoli Seeking First Champions League Win Since 2022

Villarreal’s return to Champions League football reaches a pivotal early point on Tuesday night, with Napoli arriving at Estadio de la Cerámica after both sides opened the league phase without a point. The Spanish club will mark its 50th match in Europe’s leading competition by seeking a first Champions League victory since the 2022 quarter-finals.

The League Phase Matchday 2 fixture kicks off at 21:00 local time in Villarreal on 13 October 2026. Villarreal were beaten 3-2 by Borussia Dortmund in Germany in their opening match, but remained in contention until the closing stages and now have the opportunity to respond in front of their own supporters.

Napoli travel to Spain following a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal, leaving the Italian side with the same immediate need to recover their European campaign. Kevin De Bruyne is among the visitors’ main threats after scoring twice against Frosinone in his most recent domestic appearance.

A balanced European rivalry

The clubs have met six times in European competition, producing an even record. Villarreal and Napoli have each won two of those matches, while the other two ended level.

For Villarreal, the contest is also an opportunity to restore La Cerámica as a demanding away venue in continental football. Their last Champions League win came during the knockout run of 2022, and a result against Napoli would provide the first points of this season’s league phase.
