Madrid’s derby carried its usual weight across the capital on Sunday, and Atlético de Madrid emerged with a 2-1 league victory over Real Madrid in the seventh round of the Spanish season. For Vinícius Júnior, it was an especially difficult afternoon, with the Brazilian unable to establish himself before being withdrawn early in the second half.
Real made the change in the 54th minute, shortly after Atlético had scored their second goal. Vinícius was replaced by Diomande, while Arda Güler also left the match in an unusually early double alteration from José Mourinho. The winger appeared to accept the decision without protest as Real searched for a route back into the contest.
Vinícius had offered little attacking threat in the derby, struggling to find rhythm or create danger with his passing. His subdued display was viewed as one of Real’s principal disappointments on a day when the visitors needed their leading forwards to influence a match of major importance.
Diomande, by contrast, brought a more immediate presence after coming on. The Ivorian had an opportunity soon after his introduction and was regarded, alongside Jude Bellingham, as one of the few Real players to make a positive impression despite the defeat at Atlético.
